Can’t really provide you with a rational explanation of why Excluded will win this 1400 metre race first up (given his last run was over 2800 metres in the spring) however, he just strikes me as the progressive type in a race full of also rans. He has been able to perform over this distance range previously and has won 2 of 3 first up. They possibly go forward here from the wide barrier given there’s not much speed in this and he is lightly weighted. No real confidence, but the type of race where a horse like him could smash them.
Old stager Wealthy Lad has found form of late and followed up good win here on January 7 with a close up 3rd to Flyingconi on January 21 at Flemington. Comes right down in the weights here and probably trails the speed in 2nd which should give him every possible chance.
By the Way goes better at Flemington, but is also well treated here and could be putting in the big ones late. Has recorded some very impressive final sectional this preparation.
Parthian is the ‘speed map’ special here, appearing to get a soft lead however, the caution is that he is one paced and this is his first go in Melbourne. Chasm is a total nightmare and got that elusive win recently at this track which probably means he won’t win again for another 2 years – has more than enough ability given he’s multiple Group 1 placed in an open handicap. Flyingconi probably won’t get a run, but if he does, must go in.
